Undergraduate Research Students

Ever been curious about how something works or wanted to dive deeper into a topic you’re passionate about?
Undergraduate research offers you the chance to explore your interests while building valuable skills that apply to both research and non-research careers. By completing all required trainings, assignments, and research activities, students will earn a $500 stipend at the end of the semester.

Student Eligibility

  • Participants must be active LEAPS POWER students.

  • Must be enrolled in courses during the semester in which the research is conducted.

  • Must be in good academic standing.

Undergraduate Research Requirements:

  • Attend 5 Writing Center Workshops:

    • Topics: Credible Sources, Research Paper Writing, APA Formatting, Grammar, and Journal Article Structure

  • Complete 5 Online Quizzes:

    • Topics: Plagiarism, Grammar, Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving, and Research Ethics

  • Complete 3 Mandatory Trainings:

    • Responsible Conduct of Research, Lab Safety, and Excel for Data Science

  • Complete Research Paper and Poster:

    • Write an APA-formatted paper and create a research poster with faculty mentorship

  • Present at the Student Showcase:

    • Share your research at the end-of-semester event

  • Meet with Faculty Mentor:

    • At least 1 hour per week

  • Attend a Student Conference:

    • Present research, network, and participate in professional development

Step 1: Define Your Research Interest
Identify a topic that sparks your curiosity and aligns with your academic goals.

Step 2: Create a Research Proposal
Develop a detailed research project proposal to submit as part of your application. Schedule an appointment with the STEM Coordinator for guidance throughout the process.

Step 3: Identify a Faculty Mentor
Once your research proposal is complete, you will be paired with a faculty mentor who will help refine and modify your proposal.

Step 4: Submit Research Proposal to the IRB Committee
All research involving faculty or students must be approved by the Laredo College Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure compliance with ethical standards.

Step 5: Complete Responsible Conduct of Research Training
To conduct research responsibly, complete the Responsible Conduct of Research Training offered through the CITI Program, as part of LEAPS POWER’s commitment to ethical research practices.
